Description
A vivid pink current emerges through a landscape of turquoise folds. In A Pulse Beneath the Ice, Maria Ruisi creates a sculptural abstraction whose energy unfolds through colour, physical depth and changing light.
Overlapping forms sweep diagonally across the surface. Some open into broad, softly curved passages; others narrow into sharply defined ridges. Their irregular contours preserve the individuality of the artist’s gestures and give the composition an organic rhythm.
Turquoise establishes the dominant atmosphere. Pale highlights brighten the raised edges, while green shadows gather in the recesses. Pink runs between these cooler passages, tracing their boundaries and appearing through larger openings. Its intensity gives the relief a sense of warmth beneath the surface.
A SURFACE REVEALED BY LIGHT
The work’s three-dimensional structure invites a changing experience. Side lighting brings the ridges into stronger relief; softer illumination reveals the continuity of the turquoise field. Viewed from different positions, the balance between pink, shadow and highlighted texture shifts.
This responsiveness gives the artwork a presence that extends beyond a single photographic view. Its broad movement can be appreciated from a distance, while close observation reveals smaller transitions in texture and colour.
THE QUIET ENERGY OF THE TITLE
A Pulse Beneath the Ice suggests life persisting within stillness. The cool sculptural forms and warmer underlying passages give this idea a visual expression, while leaving room for the viewer’s own associations.
The reverse bears a handwritten verse that accompanies the work:
“Beneath the ice,
where time stands still,
A hidden heartbeat
sends its thrill.”
Together, title, material and message establish an intimate connection between the visible surface and the energy it appears to conceal.

Presentation
Maria Ruisi is a contemporary artist whose work explores balance, light, and depth through abstraction and wall sculpture. Her pieces reside at the boundary between painting and sculpture, where matter comes alive to dialogue with architectural space.
Trained in arts and design in Latvia, Maria Ruisi develops a rigorous practice informed by her background in engineering and visual perception research. This dual approach provides her work with a powerful contemporary presence and profound aesthetic coherence. Each creation is a unique, hand-crafted piece, where sculpted reliefs and pigments interact with light to reveal subtle variations throughout the day. Designed as silent presences, her works enhance prestigious environments, ranging from private collections to interior design and luxury hospitality projects.
