Description

This work of art, fascinating in its composition and execution, captures attention with its striking use of juxtaposition and vivid colors. Entitled “Automobiles in motion", it presents two drawings of old cars, superimposed on an eclectic and fragmented background.

The upper portion of the work features a black and white sketch of a classic car, one that evokes the golden era of the 1930s. The clean lines and technical precision of the drawing demonstrate a real talent for detail and perspective. This sketch, devoid of color, seems to float above the painting, like an ethereal memory or an unrealized dream.

In stark contrast, the lower portion of the work displays a colorful and vibrant version of the same car. Painted in a bright and cheerful yellow, this car comes to life, vibrating with energy and dynamism. The contrast between the uncolored sketch and the vibrant illustration creates a captivating visual tension, perhaps symbolizing the transition between concept and reality, or between past and present.

The background of the painting is a complex mosaic of colorful fragments and abstract patterns. Bursts of red, blue, and green mix with more neutral and earthy areas, creating a collage effect. These background elements add additional depth and dynamism to the composition, while reinforcing the theme of fragmentation and reconstitution.

The work masterfully succeeds in telling a story through its contrasting elements, capturing both the nostalgia of a bygone age and the vibrancy of continued innovation. Everything about this painting, from the delicate lines to the vibrant bursts of color, is executed with palpable precision and passion, inviting the viewer to reflect on the passage of time and the evolution of design and technology.

Presentation

In the tradition of great production designers (Alexandre Trauner, Ken Adam), Dean Tavoularis has discreetly established himself in the history of cinema, leaving his mark on around thirty films, including almost the entire work of Francis F. Coppola.
Trained at Disney (Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins), this son of Greek immigrants, settled in California, took drawing and architecture classes, before materializing the plans of Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde, Little Big Man) and Michelangelo Antonioni (Zabriskie Point). Each of his shoots requires long hours of location scouting and documentary research, his secret for defining the opaque atmosphere of The Godfather or the humidity of Apocalypse Now, the misty exteriors of Hammett by Wim Wenders or the coquettish interiors of Carnage, his last film, directed by Roman Polanski in 2011. Since then, in Paris where he lives with the actress Aurore Clément, Dean Tavoularis paints canvases which he exhibits alongside the storyboards of his brother Alex, the very ones which were used studying the settings of his films.
