Sie haben eine Schwäche für japanische Kunst? Auf einer abgelegenen Insel gelegen, blieb die japanische Kunst lange unbeeinflusst von der westlichen Welt. In der traditionellen japanischen Kunst sind oft Holzdrucke (Ukiyo-e), Hängerollen (Kakejiku) oder illustrierte Handrollen (emaki) zu finden, welche meist auch Kalligraphie (Shodo) beinhalten. Diese genannten Medien sind typisch für die traditionelle japanische Kunst; als berühmte Künstler sind Utamaro und Utagawa Hiroshige zu nennen. In jüngster Zeit erlebt die moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst aus Japan einen explosionsartigen Aufschwung. Was einst eine isolierte Einheit war, hat sich zu einer sehr begehrten Kunstrichtung entwickelt. KünstlerInnen wie Takashi Murakami und Yayoi Kusama dominieren die Kunstszene durch das Schaffen unkonventioneller Werke und tragen damit zweifelsohne zu Japans blühendem Kunststaat bei.
Seit dem Erfolg von Superflat, einer zeitgenössischen Kunstbewegung, die von der japanischen Anime-, Manga- und Popkultur beeinflusst und von Takashi Murakami gegründet wurde, haben japanische Künstler die internationale Kunstszene erobert.
Die japanische Kunst zeichnet sich durch ihre große Vielfalt aus. Einige Künstler, wie beispielsweise Yoshitomo Nara mit seinen Zeichnungen von Kindern und Hunden mit großen unschuldigen Augen, bewahren mit dem Fokus auf das Thema der Unschuld den sensiblen und zerbrechlichen Aspekt traditionellen japanischen Kunst. Andere fügen ihrer Kunst einen gewissen Grad an Provokation und Erotik hinzu; Yayoi Kusama und Yoko Ono beispielsweise begannen ihre Karriere als Künstlerinnen in den 1960er Jahren in New York und beschäftigten sich mit den Bewegungen Happening bzw. Fluxus.
Andere wiederum interessieren sich für die Geschichte ihres Landes, die Popkultur oder die Konsumgesellschaft. Ryoko Watanabe zum Beispiel lässt sich von japanischen Stereotypen wie der Geisha inspirieren und integriert solche im Zuge ihrer Werke in moderne und urbane Landschaften.
