Abstrakter Expressionismus

Der Abstrakte Expressionismus gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Wendepunkte der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts und entstand in den 1940er-Jahren in New York rund um das, was später als New York School bezeichnet wurde.

Geprägt von so unterschiedlichen Künstlern wie Jackson Pollock und seiner gestischen Dripping-Technik, Mark Rothko mit seinen meditativen Farbfeldern oder Willem de Kooning und seinen energiegeladenen Kompositionen zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion, bedeutete diese Bewegung einen entscheidenden Bruch mit europäischen Traditionen, indem sie die Spontaneität der Geste, monumentale Formate und die direkte physische Beziehung zwischen Künstler und Leinwand ins Zentrum der Malerei stellte.

Als Erbe der surrealistischen Forschungen zu Automatismus und Unbewusstem machte sie die Malerei zu einem Experimentierfeld, in dem Farbe, Material und Bewegung nicht länger der Darstellung dienten, sondern zu einer autonomen Sprache mit bislang ungeahnter emotionaler und existenzieller Intensität wurden.

Die Verlagerung des Schwerpunkts der westlichen Kunst nach New York markierte zugleich die Etablierung einer amerikanischen kulturellen Identität auf internationaler Ebene, deren Einfluss die gesamte nachfolgende zeitgenössische Kunst prägen sollte.
