Moderne Tier-Skulpteure
Tiere waren schon immer ein wichtiges Thema in der Bildhauerei. Von den ägyptischen Skulpturen, die naturalistische Darstellungen von Rindern, Eseln und Nilpferden darstellen, bis hin zu den alten chinesischen Skulpturen aus Bronze, die Kleintiere darstellen, haben Tiere die Künstler schon immer inspiriert. 1831 etablierte der Bildhauer Antoine-Louis Barye mit seinem Werk Tiger verschlingt ein Gavial-Krokodil die Tierplastik endgültig als noble Kunst auf dem Salon de Paris. Diese Tierplastik führte dazu, dass Naturalismus und realistische Darstellungen der Fauna die Bildhauerei dieser Zeit prägten und ließ die Bedeutung der Natur und das Bestreben, sie akribisch wiederzugeben, wieder aufleben. In der modernen Bildhauerei kam es jedoch zu einer Abkehr vom Realismus und zu Künstlern wie Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso und Georges Braque. Die abstrakte Kunst, der Kubismus und der Expressionismus beeinflussten die moderne Kunst und die Tierskulptur. Es ist nicht verwunderlich, dass die Auswirkungen dieses Wandels in zeitgenössischen Werken, wie denen von Marie Ackers und Philippe Buil zu sehen sind. Die Schlichtheit ihrer Arbeiten mag eine Hommage an französische Animaliers des 19. Jahrhunderts wie Barye sein, oder sie verwenden Bronze und Stahl, um klassische Tierformen neu zu gestalten. Andere zeitgenössische Künstler wie Ti'Ou (Virginie Micheleau) nutzen die Tierskulptur, um auf Umweltaktionen und den Klimawandel hinzuweisen. Angesichts der Ungewissheit über ihre eigene Zukunft bleibt zu hoffen, dass die Tiere die Künstler weiterhin inspirieren werden.
