Description

This striking artwork presents an urban scene, bringing to life a panorama charged with dynamism and tension. The choice of black and white accentuates the drama of the composition, while the contrast amplifies the effect of movement and agitation. In the foreground, a slightly faded black car immediately catches the eye. This car appears frozen in a moment of intense activity, capturing the vibrant essence of urban life. The background is saturated with imposing buildings and architectural structures that surround a stream of vehicles, amplifying the sense of congestion and density characteristic of large metropolises. The buildings, drawn with vertical lines and angular shapes, seem almost overwhelming, creating an atmosphere of confinement and urgency. Shadows and textures vary, providing additional depth and complexity to the composition. One of the unique aspects of this work is the way it captures the duality of the city: at once a place of modernity and chaos, of progress and alienation. The cars, all different but similar, perhaps symbolise the frenetic and impersonal nature of modern urban life. This piece is not just a visual representation; it is a reflection on the human condition in a constantly moving urban environment. It forces the viewer to stop and contemplate the frenetic pace of contemporary life, beautifully illustrating the paradoxes of modernity.

Presentation

In the tradition of great production designers (Alexandre Trauner, Ken Adam), Dean Tavoularis has discreetly established himself in the history of cinema, leaving his mark on around thirty films, including almost the entire work of Francis F. Coppola.
Trained at Disney (Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins), this son of Greek immigrants, settled in California, took drawing and architecture classes, before materializing the plans of Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde, Little Big Man) and Michelangelo Antonioni (Zabriskie Point). Each of his shoots requires long hours of location scouting and documentary research, his secret for defining the opaque atmosphere of The Godfather or the humidity of Apocalypse Now, the misty exteriors of Hammett by Wim Wenders or the coquettish interiors of Carnage, his last film, directed by Roman Polanski in 2011. Since then, in Paris where he lives with the actress Aurore Clément, Dean Tavoularis paints canvases which he exhibits alongside the storyboards of his brother Alex, the very ones which were used studying the settings of his films.
