Richard Lindner

Le peintre Richard Lindner est né à Hambourg en 1901. Il passe son enfance à Nuremberg et étudie à l’Académie des Beaux Arts de Munich puis à celle de Nuremberg. Il fuit l’Allemagne à la montée au pouvoir d’Hitler en 1941 pour rejoindre la France puis quitte l’Europe pour les Etats-Unis.

D’abord illustrateur et caricaturiste pour des affiches de cinéma et des journaux, il décide de se consacrer à la peinture qu’en 1950. Influencé par l’expressionnisme allemand, son art interroge la sexualité et le rapport dépend de l’homme envers la femme. Inspiré par les corsets et les patrons qu’il observait dans le magasin de sa mère étant jeune, il représente la femme de manière provocante et sexuelle à travers des tenues burlesques. Ses personnages ubuesques s’articulent parfois comme des robots ou des machines, ils dégagent un certain onirisme.

Richard Lindner ne se revendique d’aucun mouvement mais il est proche du Pop Art dans le choix de ses couleurs. Son passé de caricaturiste et d’illustrateur marque sa technique : les formes sont simples, les traits exagérés, les contours durs, les couleurs vives posées en aplats. C’est dans les années 60 qu’il exploite le grand format et qu’il travaille la saturation des couleurs et la transparence de celle-ci avec l’aquarelle.

Il meurt en 1978 mais son oeuvre sera exposée au Musée d’Art Moderne et à la Fondation Maeght dans le cadre d’une rétrospective.
