China Underground

As a part of its opening up strategy, the Chinese government wanted to turn Beijing into the cultural window of the country. But when you look closer, the dynamism of Beijing artistic scene actually comes from the new generations of artists, students, young western expatriates, kawaii Lolitas, or underground rock musicians…
We need only to look at Yan Pei Ming’s or Jiji Jiji’s artworks to hear the growling rebellion against red capitalism!
Open to punk culture? Get into this world of artists who praise alternative and avant-garde pleasures, particularly illicit in the new Beijing where business meets sex at every corner. The specificity of this culture is that it is rooted in traditional art, which continue to infuse Chinese contemporary art. And with this combination, there are endless possibilities.
The artist Zhao Bandi for example particularly distinguishes himself for his incorporation of Chinese tradition into contemporary art techniques in his piece representing a stockholder chatting with a panda. As a metaphorical representation of the artist situation in China, Liu Bolin camouflages himself entirely in his work to denounce the lack of artist recognition and freedom against censorship and the government.
There are some recurring themes among contemporary Chinese artists: social phobia (Li Baoxun), the disappearance of individuality (Jin Bo), the overwhelming capitalism (Zhen Jun Du), persecuted minorities (Luo Dan), sexy western icons (Giofeng Cao), nudity (Ren Hang) or the decadence of society (Di Wu).

It is this new face of China that we want to show you today through a selection of works on Artsper that illustrate this constantly changing underground movement.
