The art of travel

Travelling is undoubtedly one of the most enriching experiences and we must treasure the possibility of learning about the world and discovering our inner selves by exploring with unknown cultures. It is not surprising, then, that travels are a significant source of inspiration for many artists. Whether that means creating an artwork inspired by a journey, travelling in order to create an artwork, or living elsewhere to get their creativity flowing, there is a vast multiplicity of the possible combinations that exist between an artist's travelling and the development of their work.

Travelling means letting go. So why not take a break with some art? Yes, art can also be the invitation to a unique journey. Get away from your daily routine and get inspired by the artwork of your choice.

Taken in its broader sense, travels are a source of inspiration for many artists and its representation in popular culture is abundant, whether it is in literature, music or cinema. The iconography of travel, either real or imaginary, spiritual or physical, is omnipresent in our daily lives. However, if travel in the art are usually about the person concerned in the artwork, travels also have a function of reunifying the most diverse cultures, and influence the history of taste and techniques.

The artists' relentless curiosity has led them to live a lives characterised by long travels. Whether it was for getting closer to patrons, a royal court, training with the great masters or discovering old and contemporary artworks, travelling often was, and is, a necessary step for artistic careers.

The way artists travel has dramatically evolved over the centuries. In Europe, young artists went on a tour of Europe known as “The Grand Tour", where they discovered Roman ruins and the artistic capitals of the time. These journeys would often be recorded through drawings and watercolour paintings, inspiration stored up for later.

With the development of transportation and the rise of globalisation in wider society and the art world, artists are travelling further a field. The emergence of artistic residencies and museums throughout the world has facilitated these exchanges. Contemporary artists are increasingly choosing to travel, and the theme of travels seems inherent to Art History.

Artsper has put the entire globe under the spotlight in this selection to take you on a journey of discovery to the four corners of the world. Whether you are a seasoned adventurer, a novice traveller or merely curious, this selection is made for you! From paintings to sculptures to photographs, every medium plays its part in whisking you away to your dream holiday spot or to unknown horizons.
