Inspired by Franz Kline
Franz Kline was an American painter born in 1910. He passed his childhood in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania- formerly known as “Diamond City '' due to its connection with the coal mining industry - where his parents of English and German origin immigrated to. Franz Kline was a first-generation American painter associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1940s and 1950s.
Receiving a classical education, Kline studied painting at the Philadelphia School, guided by the work of the Dutch artist Harmenszoon van Rijn Rembrandt and the French painter Edouard Manet. The influence of his training can be seen in Kline's earlier works that demonstrate a highly figurative painting style of landscapes and portraits alike. Later on in his career, Kline set up his workshop in New York where he would be surrounded by like-minded peers in the vibrant city. Alongside other action painters like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Motherwell, as well as other creatives such as local poets, dancers, and musicians, Kline established an informal group known as the New York School in his hayday.
Kline's distinctive style secured him a recognition and success that came about from the 1950s onwards. His signature style was constructed around a display of broken images. These designs often conveyed a dilapidated, brutalist or unfinished architectural structure such as that of bridges, scaffolding and other geometric forms. Kline's palette remained highly limited- he only relied upon three colors - white, black and gray. Far from surface-level, depthless pieces of art, his works drew upon the concept of dimensionality. Kline was extremely clever in his ability to draw the eye of the observer into the the abyss of the canvas through his designs. Franz Kline is known today as the star of Abstract Expressionism. As a big player in the buzzing New York scene of the 1950s, he saw fame during his lifetime whilst leaving a strong mark on the modern art scene after his passing in 1962.
