Tracey Emin: Nudes

Tracey Emin's autobiographical and confessional artwork instantly captivated the British art scene since her debut as one of the Young British Artists of the 80's. Supported by Charles Saatchi, alongside fellow YBA Damien Hirst, Emin soon became an international success. Her career is characterized by her unorthodox and candid approach. Renowned installations such as My Bed and Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995 are provocative yet sincere, coming from a very personal place as the artist reveals intimate details within her art.

And her series of nudes are no different. This collection of portraits depicts bodies, some alone, some with multiple figures doing sexual acts, with some being more abstract and others more figurative. A series she has been creating since the late 90's, the variety of the collection is massive in terms of both their theme and visually.

However the most recurrent format of Tracy Emin's nudes is a sparing application using swift brush strokes that create a looseness and immediacy. There is a depersonalization within the series, as each nude is faceless, creating a blanket of anonymity. This is interesting as Emin scrutinises her relationship with her own body as she explores self-representation and self-realisation through this series.
