Presentation

Paul Rebeyrolle is a French painter, sculptor and a lithographer, born in 1926 in Eymoutiers. After studying in Limoges, he moved to Paris and discovered the contemporary and classic painters. He joins the New Figuration movement.

Paul Rebeyrolle is part of the Homme Témoin manifesto, whose head is Jean Bouret, he extolled a return to realism. In 1948, he participated with other artists in the exhibition "L'homme Témoin", which took place at Galerie du Bac and which is the reason for the Jeune Peinture movement.

In 1949, Paul Rebeyrolle organized the « Salon de la Jeune Peinture » with Pierre Descargues, Denys Chevalier, Philippe Cara Costea and Gaëtan de Rosnay. The first edition took place in 1950 at the Galerie des Beaux Arts.

In 1953, Paul Rebeyrolle became the member of a French communist party. However, the Hungarian invasion by the Russians in 1956 took him away from the party. He therefore painted the « À bientôt j'espère ». In 1959, the committee of the first biennial in Paris ordered a painting from him and it decorated the stairs of the Palais Beaux Arts.

Paul Rebeyrolle's work is a call for freedom. Art is a means for the artist to rebel against injustices, denounce alienation and man's oppression and therefore his work is like a commitment. In 1968, he began a series of "political" works.

In 1963, he left Paris and settled in the Aube region, then Cote d'or, where he died in 2005.
