Reaching for Warmth and Light – Diptych, 2023

Tanya Sviatlichnaya

“Reaching for Warmth and Light (or Each Other)" is a diptych that explores the expressive architecture of aloe plants through repetition, movement and subtle variation. Although each drawing stands as an independent composition, together they form a visual dialogue, inviting the viewer to move between two perspectives of the same living structure.

Executed entirely with colored pencils, the drawings emphasize gradual tonal transitions and delicate surface textures. Deep blue-green forms are accented by cool turquoise highlights and subtle magenta edges, creating a quiet chromatic vibration against the untouched white paper.

Rather than presenting aloe as a botanical specimen, the work transforms it into a metaphor for resilience and quiet communication. The title intentionally leaves room for interpretation: are the plants reaching toward sunlight, or toward each other?

“Reaching for Warmth and Light" - an early work that foreshadows the artist's continuing exploration of botanical structure, rhythm and the expressive language of plants.
