The Castle of Saumur, 2016

Sergey Pietilä

A dramatic perspective defines this figurative landscape. High vantage points reveal a structured urban sprawl unfolding below. The composition is anchored by the imposing mass of a fortress. Cool blue tones dominate the atmosphere. Deep shadows create a sense of mystery and weight. They contrast sharply with the pale light hitting the stone walls.
Pastel strokes blend seamlessly to create a soft, hazy sky. The texture suggests a fleeting moment of late afternoon light. Fine lines delineate the jagged rooftops and distant greenery. A vibrant green lawn provides a sudden burst of color against the muted palette.
Two flags flutter atop the ramparts. Their purple hues add a regal accent to the scene. The artist emphasizes the verticality of the architecture. This creates a tension between the solid stone and the open horizon. Every mark conveys a precise balance between architectural rigidity and atmospheric softness. The viewer is led from the dark foreground toward the luminous distance where the river meets the land.
