Red Oak, 2017

Sergey Pietilä

The pastel expresses itself here with remarkable freedom. The stroke intertwines to draw the silhouette of a tree in purple hues. The material is deposited in light layers. It suggests the movement of the foliage under an azure blue sky.
The composition plays on chromatic contrasts. The deep red dialogues with touches of green and white. These luminous flashes evoke reflections of water or spring flowers.
The figurative approach prioritizes atmosphere over photographic precision. The drawing captures the essence of a Brazilian landscape. The eye glides along the robust trunk towards a blurred horizon.
The technical execution testifies to a mastery of the medium. The dynamic hatching brings relief to the scene. The final rendering oscillates between abstraction and natural observation. This piece dated 2016 is part of a research on light and color. The whole concludes with a discreet signature in the bottom right.
