Joan Miró: Lithographs

Joan Miró is a surrealist artist best known for his paintings, sculptures and ceramics. But Miró was also a prolific printmaker, creating numerous prints - specifically 1,000 lithographs - over the span of his career.

Lithography is a method of printmaking that uses a stone or flat surface drawn on with an oily substance to transfer the ink onto a sheet of paper. Miró became completely enamored with this technique and the art he was producing from it, to the extent that he practically gave up painting from 1954-1958 to focus on these prints alone. And his prints received an immensely positive reception from a large number of critics, earning him awards such as the Grand Prize for Graphic Work at the Venice Biennale in 1954.

His process of printmaking allowed him to create works which were complete reflections of himself; as part of his drawing, he would let his hand move randomly across the surface and leave the artwork partially to chance. This authenticity he was able to portray within his art was key to his popularity and success, which still lingers today. His prints make up 91% of all of his works bought on the market, making them not only beautiful artworks but valuable investments.
