Presentation

Victor Spahn, born on March 20, 1949, in Paris to Russian parents, is a French painter whose work is particularly known for its representation of movement, sport, and dynamic scenes. Often nicknamed the "painter of movement," he develops a painting immediately recognizable by its fluid compositions, figures in action, and his way of suggesting speed through color, lines, and superimpositions. His artistic journey begins, however, in the field of decoration and mosaic. After secondary studies which he quickly abandoned, he worked notably at a ceramic tile manufacturer before creating, in 1968, his own mosaic decoration company. In 1970, he won a First Prize in New York for a mosaic table and participated in parallel the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Artistes Français.

The encounter with the painter André Lanskoy constitutes a major turning point in his career. Lanskoy guides him towards painting and becomes his master. This relationship plays a determining role in the evolution of his pictorial language, while the experience gained with mosaic continues to influence his sensitivity to the construction of forms, color relationships, and the rhythm of the composition. Victor Spahn began to exhibit from 1971 and presented his first solo exhibition in 1975 at the Galerie Liszt in Paris. In 1976, the Toyota company dedicated an exhibition to him in Paris. He then participated in many salons and exhibitions in France and abroad.

Starting in 1982, sport became one of the fundamental themes of his work. Polo, then golf, tennis, sailing, rugby, Formula 1, and other disciplines offer him a privileged ground to explore speed, energy, and movement. He creates many posters related to the sports world, notably for the Peugeot Golf Open, the Perrier Tournament, the World Polo Championships, Stade Français, and the French Formula 1 Grand Prix. He also created the poster for the first Paris-Bercy Tennis Open in 1986 and that of the World Handball Championships in 1987. In 1992, he notably created the poster for the French Formula 1 Grand Prix. This activity contributes largely to his image as a painter of movement.

Victor Spahn's practice relies on several techniques, including painting, lithography, serigraphy, and hand-enhanced graphic works. His experience with mosaic remains essential in his approach to material and composition. He paints notably with the palette knife and brush, constructing scenes where forms seem to extend and move in space. His graphic works, lithographs, and serigraphies also contribute to widely disseminating his artistic universe.

His work quickly gained significant international recognition. He exhibited notably in Paris, Mulhouse, Strasbourg, Antibes, Geneva, Johannesburg, Montreal, Chicago, Palm Beach, Tokyo, Oslo, Honfleur, Cannes, and New York. In 1984, he exhibited at Wally Findlay in Chicago and Palm Beach; in 1987, at the Galerie du Cygne in Montreal, at Wally Findlay in Chicago, and at Shibuya in Tokyo. His ties with Japan continued over the following years, notably with exhibitions in Tokyo in 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997-1998.

In the early 2000s, Victor Spahn expanded his repertoire to cities and landscapes of the world. He transposes villages, landscapes, and large metropolises onto canvas, while maintaining his pictorial language based on movement and the dynamism of forms. He also collaborates with recognized houses and brands, notably Lancel, for which he created a work around the BB bag in 2010, presented in the Champs-Élysées window in Paris. The same year, he created a work intended for the cover of a limited series celebrating the centenary of the Michelin Guide.

Victor Spahn has received several awards during his career, notably the "Henri Kerouredan" Prize from the FIAP in 1978, the winner of the Salon Art 28 in 1980, and the Grand Médaille de Vermeil des Arts, Sciences et Lettres in 2007. His work is also represented in many private collections and distributed through international galleries and editions. Between contemporary painting, graphic art, sport, and urban landscape, Victor Spahn has built a unique universe in which color, speed, and movement become the main vectors of his artistic expression.
