Description
This unique and fascinating artwork depicts a scene that is both surreal and deeply symbolic. The artist uses a bold color palette, dominated by a vibrant orange background that creates a striking contrast with the eerie whiteness of the skull at the center of the work. The intricately detailed skull is a classic symbol of mortality, but it is subverted here to tell an intriguing story. On the board of this skull, the artist has drawn two figures dressed in earthy colors—an adult and a child—who appear to be peacefully riding a bicycle. This unexpected juxtaposition of living and dead elements provokes a profound reflection on the cycle of life and the coexistence of vitality and mortality. Within this skull, a faintly visible green vegetation emerges, likely an indication of the resilience of life even in the darkest of contexts. This vegetation could symbolize hope, rebirth, or the perpetual loop of nature. The delicate texture of the work is accentuated by fine details, such as the small inscriptions and subtle nuances that complete the whole. The viewer's eye is irremediably drawn to the contrasts of colors and layers of meaning, making each observation of the work a rich and immersive experience. In conclusion, this work is a captivating exploration of the themes of life, death, and continuity. It challenges the viewer through its strong symbolisms and unique aesthetics, establishing a dialogue between reality and imagination. A remarkable piece that combines visual art and philosophical reflection in a masterful way.
Presentation
Born in 1957 in Grenoble (France), Anne-Marie Vesco lives and works in Montreuil, a suburb of Paris. Graduated from the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) of Cachan dept of Fine and Applied arts, from 1995 to 2011, she taught at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art (ENSAAMA) in Paris. She has been an independent artist since 2011.Anne-Marie Vesco's works are in several private collections (in Europe, Japan, Lebanon, China…) and in Public Contemporary Collections of Montreuil (2003 purchase) and Fontenay-sous-Bois (2009 purchase), in France.
Anne-Marie Vesco’s series Nothing and its Opposite (Rien et son Contraire), started in 2012, is comprised of small objects picked up by chance along the way or discovered at flea markets. There is an on-going dialogue between these and her drawings and paintings.Captured under transparent resin, her collections of objects no longer reflections but the things themselves are infinitely poetic, by this work she has created a bridge between Contemporary visual and Outsider - singular art.
Her contribution to the arts (theatre, music and dance), has been considerable.
