Description

The depicted work is a striking piece of abstract art, utilizing geometric shapes and bold colors to create a visually compelling composition. This artwork exemplifies the principles of abstract modernism with its use of large, flat regions of color, and carefully balanced forms. A dominant white curve bisects the canvas diagonally, offering a dynamic sense of motion and separation. The curve juxtaposes sharply against a backdrop of overlapping geometric forms in vibrant hues of blue and green. These shapes vary in tone from deep, almost forest green to a bright, almost neon lime, interspersed with blocks of rich cobalt blue, adding depth and complexity to the composition. The minimalistic yet vivid color palette creates a striking visual contrast, emphasizing the purity of form and the precision of line. Each shape appears meticulously calculated, contributing to a sense of harmonious chaos. The juxtaposition of the soft, flowing white curve with the angular, rigid blocks generates a tension that pulls the viewer's eye across the canvas, evoking a sense of dynamic movement and spatial complexity. Overall, this artwork is a testament to the power of abstract shapes and colors in evoking emotion and meaning. Its simplicity belies the depth of its composition, inviting viewers to explore and interpret the interplay of form and color.

Presentation

Kotaro Machiyama's work explores abstraction as a way of reconnecting with the simple act of seeing. He removes storytelling, depth, and clear references so that color and form can stand on their own, without directing the viewer toward a specific meaning.

He is inspired by the way a child first experiences the world, before everything has a name. At that stage, color and shape are felt freely and openly. In his painting practice, he tries to return to that space of direct and intuitive perception.

In the studio, he intentionally leaves out recognizable figures and narrative elements. This allows him to focus more closely on how colors and forms relate to one another. Through this process, the painting becomes a living interaction of shapes, tones, and energy.

His paintings are not meant to represent something specific. Instead, they offer space. They invite the viewer to slow down, to look without expectation, and to connect with their own sensations, emotions, and memories. For him, painting is a place where seeing becomes immediate, personal, and alive.

Shifting Consciousness.

I explore the causes of my attraction to an object, and then create a work of art using the shapes and colors I find as a result.

The abstract works, shaved down and simplified, pose questions to the viewer.

These questions prompt the viewer to think, and even if only slightly, to move their consciousness away from the situation of “now".

This is to enjoy "thinking" itself.

It is similar to the feeling of living in an "extraordinary" world; a world other than reality, such as the same feeling when you go to the movies or travel.

In ancient Japan, festivals and Sake were prepared for the "Hare" (extraordinary) days to get rid of the “Kegare" (bad things) accumulated in daily life and to gain vitality.

However, the glamour of the festivals and the Sake that had been part of the "Hare" (extraordinary) days became part of the daily life. Therefor, the "Kegare" (bad things) could no longer be removed.

Shifting consciousness becomes a tool to enter to the "Hare" (extraordinary) days in its original meaning.
