Description
This striking artwork presents a portrait of a woman rendered in a captivating palette of blues and whites, evoking a sense of calm and mystery. Her elongated face, reminiscent of Modigliani's style, is painted with bold brushstrokes that convey both strength and ethereal beauty. The deep, penetrating eyes draw the viewer in, creating a connection to an unspoken narrative. Her lips, touched with a soft red hue, offer a stark contrast, adding a focal point that accentuates her serene yet enigmatic expression. The interplay of light and shadow across her face imbues the portrait with depth and dimensionality. Cascading blue tones adorn her hair, integrating with the background, blurring the boundaries between the subject and her surroundings. This fusion of abstract elements with the figurative form creates a dreamlike quality, making the piece a compelling study of emotion and color.
Presentation
Guy Ghazanchyan is a contemporary Armenian painter and sculptor, born in 1991 in Yerevan into a family of renowned artists. The son of painters Gagik Ghazanchyan and Lilit Soghomonyan, and grandson of sculptor Nona Gabrielyan, he was immersed in a rich and stimulating artistic universe from a very young age.
He studied painting at the Armenian State Academy of Fine Arts from 2007 to 2013, graduating with the highest distinction, the Eduard Isabekyan Prize, for his work I Know Where It's Flying. In 2012, he was selected for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, an experience that marked a turning point in his artistic career.
Ghazanchyan's work explores profound themes such as freedom, identity, and collective memory, often through expressive portraits and symbolic compositions. His major series include Behind the Walls (2016), awarded the Presidential Youth Award; AKANates (2021), exhibited at the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art; and IUVENIS (2022), which celebrates contemporary Armenian youth.
His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including in Washington DC (Traveling Without Moving, 2017), Rome (Subconscious is Freedom, 2025), Zurich, Naples, Groningen, Beirut, and Los Angeles. In 2019, he became a member of the Artists' Union of Armenia.
