Description
This oil painting captures a moment of profound introspection. The face emerges from a cool turquoise background with raw intensity. Heavy brushstrokes define the contours of the subject. Light and shadow collide across the skin. The eyes remain closed. This suggests a state of deep meditation or internal struggle.
The artist employs a figurative approach to explore the complexities of human identity. Thick layers of paint create a tactile surface. Pale tones blend with earthy reds and deep greys. This contrast emphasizes the fragility of the human condition. The composition focuses entirely on the psychological weight of the subject.
The technique reflects a mastery of emotional expression. Every stroke feels intentional and urgent. It transforms a simple likeness into a study of collective memory and solitude. The artwork balances classical portraiture with a modern, expressive energy. This tension is visible in the blurred edges of the jaw and the sharp highlight on the nose. The piece concludes with a subtle play of light on the neck, anchoring the figure in a void of silent reflection.
Presentation
Guy Ghazanchyan is a contemporary Armenian painter and sculptor, born in 1991 in Yerevan into a family of renowned artists. The son of painters Gagik Ghazanchyan and Lilit Soghomonyan, and grandson of sculptor Nona Gabrielyan, he was immersed in a rich and stimulating artistic universe from a very young age.
He studied painting at the Armenian State Academy of Fine Arts from 2007 to 2013, graduating with the highest distinction, the Eduard Isabekyan Prize, for his work I Know Where It's Flying. In 2012, he was selected for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, an experience that marked a turning point in his artistic career.
Ghazanchyan's work explores profound themes such as freedom, identity, and collective memory, often through expressive portraits and symbolic compositions. His major series include Behind the Walls (2016), awarded the Presidential Youth Award; AKANates (2021), exhibited at the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art; and IUVENIS (2022), which celebrates contemporary Armenian youth.
His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including in Washington DC (Traveling Without Moving, 2017), Rome (Subconscious is Freedom, 2025), Zurich, Naples, Groningen, Beirut, and Los Angeles. In 2019, he became a member of the Artists' Union of Armenia.
