Description
The Meter Man (Green) is a visually bold and conceptually rich work by Ukrainian artist Robert Saller, created as part of a rare four-painting series in 2007. In this piece, Saller turns a seemingly mundane object – a Soviet-era electricity meter – into a surreal figure that seems to inhabit the canvas with personality and quiet intensity.
Painted using stencils and rollers in his distinctive Poptrans group style, the work combines graphic flatness with cultural depth. The meter itself, rendered in red and violet, stares outward with fuse-like eyes, transformed from household device into an eerie, almost sentient character. Behind it, a decorative green floral pattern evokes the hand-painted walls of traditional Transcarpathian village homes – a nostalgic reference that contrasts sharply with the cold functionality of the device.
But the deeper meaning lies in the artist's subtle irony. In Ukrainian and Russian slang, the word “счётчик" (meter) refers not only to measuring electricity but also to applying extreme interest on debt – as in “putting someone on the meter." With that in mind, The Meter Man (Green) becomes more than a portrait of a forgotten appliance; it's a quiet metaphor for pressure, control, and the invisible systems that surround our daily lives.
Both playful and thought-provoking, this painting invites the viewer to see the familiar through new eyes – a hallmark of Saller's postmodern vision.
Presentation
Robert Saller (b. 1967) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his bold fusion of pop art aesthetics, conceptual satire, and post-Soviet critique. A graduate of the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts, Saller has been a key member of the underground art group Poptrans since 1996. He now lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.
Saller primarily works with acrylics, rarely using brushes. Instead, he applies paint through layers of stencils using rollers and sponges, creating a graphic, print-like texture reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein's visual language. Yet beneath the surface gloss lies biting irony and psychological depth. His works often deconstruct gender dynamics, emotional trauma, and cultural mythologies through a visual language of seductive colours and familiar iconography.
In his acclaimed Man Woman Blackout series, Saller uses luminophore pigment to make hidden elements glow in the dark – a literal metaphor for the unseen layers of human relationships. Other notable series, such as Bad Beautiful and Carpathian Album, reframe innocence, nationalism, and nostalgia with unsettling wit.
Robert Saller's artworks are at once visually striking and intellectually disarming, drawing the viewer into a world where irony, violence, and desire coexist just beneath the surface.
