Description
Fernando Alday was attracted to the spiritual and abstract side of life from an early age. His father was a dentist and an art dealer, and he had a collection of manuscripts, including work by the poet Arthur Rimbaud, which had a profound influence on him. At five, he became interested in calligraphy and was fascinated by sepia ink. He grew up surrounded by books, he would brush off the dust, arrange them by colour, and spend hours absorbed in their texture and context. Old paper and medieval ink are fundamental to Alday's compositions. The process begins with an almost archaeological search for paper, colour, and textures. The artist is passionate about paper and its uses as a material to depict the passing of time and convey the ever present and fleeting nature of life's cycle.
Presentation
“... He always finds a link between the material and the idea, and this relationship established involves also the observer, which gradually discovers the creation. "It is a succession of sensations which binds the impression of being located on the main wall of a demolished building. His creations are exposing on order to view the various layers of paintings in which the property has written its history. This way it is Alday's painting...." -ABC Journal
