Description
This artwork strikingly presents a portrait set against a vivid red background, emphasizing the emotional intensity of the piece. The brushwork is expressive and bold, with dynamic strokes of dark and light tones creating a multidimensional face. The artist skillfully uses an interplay of shadow and light, lending the subject an enigmatic yet captivating presence. Patches of contrasting colors, including blues and reds, enliven the hair and face, adding depth and vibrancy. The eyes, though undefined, draw the viewer into an introspective gaze, while the slightly tilted head suggests contemplation. This painting stands out for its abstract interpretation, merging impressionism with modern expression, and challenging the viewer to discern the underlying emotions. The intimate scale of the portrait contributes to its powerful impact, inviting personal reflection and engagement.
Presentation
Guy Ghazanchyan is a contemporary Armenian painter and sculptor, born in 1991 in Yerevan into a family of renowned artists. The son of painters Gagik Ghazanchyan and Lilit Soghomonyan, and grandson of sculptor Nona Gabrielyan, he was immersed in a rich and stimulating artistic universe from a very young age.
He studied painting at the Armenian State Academy of Fine Arts from 2007 to 2013, graduating with the highest distinction, the Eduard Isabekyan Prize, for his work I Know Where It's Flying. In 2012, he was selected for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, an experience that marked a turning point in his artistic career.
Ghazanchyan's work explores profound themes such as freedom, identity, and collective memory, often through expressive portraits and symbolic compositions. His major series include Behind the Walls (2016), awarded the Presidential Youth Award; AKANates (2021), exhibited at the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art; and IUVENIS (2022), which celebrates contemporary Armenian youth.
His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including in Washington DC (Traveling Without Moving, 2017), Rome (Subconscious is Freedom, 2025), Zurich, Naples, Groningen, Beirut, and Los Angeles. In 2019, he became a member of the Artists' Union of Armenia.
