Statement of Intent — Drisme-3
“Drisme-3" occupies a unique place in the series: its square format — 30 × 30 cm — gives it a presence distinct from the other horizontal pieces. Where the rectangular format favors a linear reading axis, the square imposes a centrifugal balance: the composition must radiate from a center or be organized around an invisible axis of symmetry.
As in the entire Drisme series, AERO 82 explores here the interweaving of outlines that delineate essentialist colored spaces. The cast shadow effect—a direct legacy of graffiti practice—gives the composition its volume and depth.
The square and the letter: a relationship of tension
The square format is one of the preferred formats of modern painting: from Mark Rothko's color fields to Ad Reinhardt's "Black Paintings," it embodies a form of intrinsic balance. In graffiti, the square is less common: walls are horizontal, train cars are panoramic. Forcing the letter into a square format compels it to undergo a formal reorganization that reveals new possibilities.
AERO 82 responds to this challenge programmatically: the composition reorganizes itself to occupy the available space, the outlines adjust, and the colored areas find a new equilibrium. "Drisme-3" is thus a piece that questions perceptual habits linked to the format, forcing the eye to move differently.
How does a letter, a curve, a colored space occupy the square without subjugating it? This is the formal question posed by "Drisme-3".
A vocabulary in variation
The Drisme series poses a key question of contemporary artistic practice: how can a stable visual grammar produce singular and non-interchangeable works? AERO 82's answer lies in variation: each piece explores a different configuration of the same vocabulary, a new solution to a recurring formal problem — a logic that can be found in both Monet's "Haystacks" and Sol LeWitt's "Variations".
It is this serial logic that places AERO 82's approach within a lineage of the great cycles of abstract painting. Each issue is a necessary variation, not a simple repetition.
Formal analysis
In "Drisme-3," the composition is organized centrifugally around a central axis. The outlines radiate outwards, the colored spaces respond to each other in balance. The square canvas can be hung in different orientations without losing its coherence—a sign of a composition conceived as a whole.
The choice of acrylic markers over spray paint is significant: it allows for a precision of line that spray paint cannot provide, a finesse in the outline, and a control over small formats that would be more difficult with spray paint. This technical decision is consistent with the ambition of the series: to produce pieces that are both rooted in the Graffiti tradition and capable of functioning on the intimate scale of the canvas.
