In this work, I explore the phenomenon of collective memory through the synthesis of two defining visual symbols of a bygone era—'The Fish' porcelain set and the intricate patterns of vintage wall carpets. In the Soviet-era interior, these objects existed inseparably, together creating a sacred space of domestic comfort. Ironically, the porcelain carp was virtually never used for its intended purpose, remaining a pure symbol of warmth.
I extract this everyday artifact from its familiar context and transport it into the realm of metaphysical still life. The composition is immersed in a warm palette of ochre, terracotta, and gold. The heavily textured background and the complex, woven patterns in the left corner are a direct nod to the designs of those very carpets. By melting the graphic scales of the porcelain into the carpet ornamentation, I blur the line between object and background.
For me, this painting is about capturing the exact moment when mass-produced relics of past daily life lose their utilitarian function, merge into a singular cultural code, and transform into objects of pure art.
