Evening on the balcony, 2026

Olha Symonenko

This painting is a contemporary figurative composition centered on two women sharing an intimate evening together on a balcony overlooking a European urban courtyard.
Two female figures sit at a small table on an open balcony, enjoying champagne and an unhurried conversation. One woman, dressed in an elegant white dress, raises a glass of champagne, while her companion sits opposite her. A small lantern on the table creates a warm point of light between the two figures. Behind them, geometric facades, balconies, and illuminated windows of the surrounding buildings recede beneath a deep violet evening sky.
The human figures are the central focus of the composition. Their poses, gestures, and interaction create a natural sense of companionship and intimacy. The architectural setting frames the women and establishes a strong contrast between the quiet human presence in the foreground and the surrounding evening cityscape.
The painting is characterized by expressive yet clearly defined forms, a rich nocturnal palette, and strong contrasts between cool and warm tones. Deep blue and violet dominate the evening atmosphere, while ivory, muted ochre, and warm golden light from the lantern and windows create luminous accents. The simplified architectural forms and graphic lines of the balcony railing provide a structured background for the softer shapes and gestures of the figures.
The intimate balcony setting creates the feeling of a private moment suspended in time. The work explores female friendship, companionship, and the simple pleasure of sharing an evening together. The city becomes a quiet backdrop for a human encounter, while the warm light, champagne, and relaxed poses evoke an atmosphere of closeness, conversation, and enjoyment of the present moment.
