Insomnia, 2023

Juliane Hundertmark

This oil painting explores the fragile boundary between wakefulness and dreams. The Berlin-based artist employs a personal form of expressionism to dissect the human psyche. Every figure reveals a raw, unmasked truth. A domestic bedroom transforms into a surreal theater of the subconscious.
Distorted forms and animal mimicry describe a complex emotional landscape. A canine figure rests on the bed, blending human posture with animal instinct. Beside it, pale figures wait in a state of suspended animation. These characters lack glamour. They embody the honest, often uncomfortable realities of existence.
The composition is dominated by a vivid red palette. An ethereal, spectral presence looms over the scene, acting as a visual metaphor for internal anxiety. This transparent spirit represents the hidden personality that follows us into the night. The artist uses satire to critique social conditions through a psychoanalytic lens. The narrative unfolds with rhythmic tension. A single candle provides a flickering light, casting a glow on the pale skin of the subjects. The artwork balances aggression and gentleness within a claustrophobic space. This tension is anchored by the precise application of oil paint and a structured figurative arrangement.
