Description
Oil & Collage on canvas
A line of distorted figures stands in a rigid, theatrical row. Their expressions are vacant, their proportions skewed. This oil painting captures a sharp sense of social satire through a lens of expressionism. The figures wear suits and uniforms that feel like costumes, masking a deeper psychological tension. Above them, a handwritten word looms like a label or a warning.
In the foreground, animalistic creatures break the formality of the scene. These beings act as visual metaphors for the subconscious. They mirror the aggressive or gentle instincts hidden beneath the human facade. The palette blends muted tones with sudden bursts of saturated color. The ground is a fragmented mosaic of golden hues, adding to the dreamlike, surreal atmosphere.
The composition evokes the spirit of German masters like George Grosz. It strips away glamour to reveal the raw truth of human interaction. Every brushstroke emphasizes the absurdity of social pretension. The contrast between the stiff humans and the fluid creatures creates a poignant dialogue on identity. This artwork transforms a simple gathering into a psychoanalytic study of the modern condition.
Presentation
Juliane Hundertmark is a German artist born in 1971 who lives and works in Berlin, Germany. She is considered one of Berlin's most original and inventive emerging painters. Juliane Hundertmark communicates everyday truths as she experiences them, unmasking pretentious and formalities. She paints her characters in staged groups, without deception or glamour, her distinctive style uses unusual visual metaphors to convey these observations. Animal mimicry is used to describe both aggressive and gentle behaviour, while eerie transparent spirits represent a character's subconscious personality or spirit, and often appear beside their owners. Whilst yielding many interpretations, Hundertmark's work is primarily concerned with psychoanalysis. And as a keen observer, Hundertmark has developed a distinctive style of satire. She might be compared with German painters such as George Grosz and Otto Dix, however her paintings are executed in a very personal style of expressionism, which seems to embody the social conditions of our current times. She studied at Design and Stage Design at Bayreuth and has a Masters in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Art of Nuremberg.
