Description
Urban art takes hold of a playful support here. The skateboard deck becomes a canvas where an inflatable aesthetic is expressed. Spherical and colorful shapes float in an azure blue sky. Red, green, and yellow oppose the immaculate whiteness of stylized clouds.
The artist uses spray paint to create fluid gradients. The rendering imitates the smooth and glossy texture of plastic. This work plays on the contrast between visual lightness and an underlying critique of consumption.
The composition evokes a dreamlike world. The generous curves recall childlike imagery and manufactured objects. Each shade is applied with precision to accentuate the effect of volume. This piece combines the energy of the street with a rigorous plastic search.
The object retains its original shape while becoming a decorative element. The surface is treated with particular care to highlight the synthetic aspect of the bubbles. The whole is composed of spray paint on wood.
Presentation
Born in 1976, Gum is an emerging artist of the French street art scene. An inheritor of the street, he has been evolving along with his sole weapon: spray paint.
Acidulous, "bubble" and playful, plastic is the main focus of his artistic approach and the common thread of his favorite themes: advertisement, consumption, excessive consumption and sex. Just like our Earth is flooded with plastic and waste, his works are as well. While plastic is melting away due to global warning, the world is busy looking elsewhere.
Through the use of stencils, he breathes in life to his characters, with curves or a candy floss which he named Hello clito, Mr Masturbator or Foofoonette plastik, he portrays this in a brilliant manner combining provocativeness along with childish references and a porno-chic universe. He positions his work between innocent joys of childhood and a hate for prefabricated consumerism: a bi-faceted art.
His work has been exhibited several times in Montpellier, his adopted city, but also in Paris, Brussels, Munich, Berlin, Denmark, and Italy as he won during the Biennial of Naples.
