Description
A dreamlike vision settles in this blue-saturated setting. The composition plays on a precarious balance between reality and fantasy. A character in uniform dominates the scene. Their posture is rigid. Their gaze seems lost.
They ride a monumental skull that floats in an abstract space. The material comes alive through precise oil strokes. The contrast between the cold gray of the clothing and the orange hues of the bony base creates a visual tension.
In the background, spectral silhouettes float. They seem drawn by an invisible current. The pencil line highlights certain details, bringing graphic rigor to the whole.
Movement is here suggested by fluid and curved lines that cross the sky. This figurative work explores the themes of memory and the fall. The light strikes the rider's face to accentuate their features. The background is punctuated by small white flashes evoking a distant cosmos. The whole rests on a play of complementary colors. Each figure seems suspended in an eternal silence.
Presentation
Olivier Massebeuf is a French painter, born in Lyon in 1963. He moved to Paris in 1982 when he was admitted in the Fine Arts School. He wasn't at ease with this institution and its teachings: he dropped out a year later and began a course in English, but didn't give up on painting.
The artist does figurative painting, and is fascinated by gesture and movement, inspiring life, in his lifelike characters.
