Description

The work brings together a historical photograph and a pencil drawing created by the artist after the image. The photograph in the lower section comes from a private German family album dating from the Second World War, which the artist found at a second-hand market. It depicts a quiet mountainous valley. By redrawing the scene in pencil, the artist transforms a private memory once captured instantaneously by the camera into a slow, handmade image marked by personal attention.

The juxtaposition of photograph and drawing places the same landscape between original documentation and renewed observation. Rather than functioning as a simple copy, the drawing becomes an attempt to trace and reconstruct a memory belonging to strangers. Removed from its original family context, the photograph has lost much of its identifying information: the people are absent, the location remains unknown, and its private meaning has become uncertain. Through the act of drawing, however, the artist gives this displaced image another temporality and a new way of being seen. The work thus reflects on the relationship between private memory, historical archives, and collective history, while examining how an image changes meaning as it is circulated, lost, and reinterpreted.

China  • 1989

Presentation

Born in 1989 in Shenyang, China.

Lives and works between China and France, QI Han is originally from Shenyang, a city in northern China. He was introduced to contemporary art during his studies in Dalian (China). QI Han's artistic creations are mainly painting. Being greatly influenced by the concept "the imagination of northern culture" proposed by the artists representing the Northern Art Group in the 85 'Artistic New Trend movement at the beginning of contemporary Chinese art, he expresses rationality in his works. , coldness and indifference by studying the mysterious power of the culture of North China.

In 2014, after arriving in France, he began to create video works. As he also lives and studies in the north of France, his visual memory of the environment where he grew up meets the aesthetic tradition of architecture and religious painting of the Flemish region, as well as the icy and hazy climate. North. This gives QI Han a unique artistic experience to explore the "cold aesthetic".

In 2017, QI Han participated in the AR + image sector between the École Supérieure d'Art du Nord-Pas-de Calais and Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts. QI Han started to use multimedia in his works, in which there are some installations and performances. During this period, QI Han directed its creation towards the interdisciplinary field of art and science, especially with regard to interstellar space. Subsequently, he created the series "The spatial landscape" which includes painting, installation, video.

QI Han is also deeply influenced by the artistic conception of Chinese landscape painting proposed by the Chinese painter SHI TAO (1642-1707) of the QING dynasty. He refers a lot to Hieronymus Bosch, René Magritte, Philip K. Dick, and Stanley Kubrick. The character of QI Han's works consists of elements of science fiction, mysticism and surrealism.
