Description
The work vertically juxtaposes a private German family photograph dating from the Second World War with a pencil drawing created by the artist after the image. The black-and-white photograph below comes from a family album acquired by the artist at a second-hand market. It shows an extended mountain range, with light falling across the uneven surfaces of rock and snow. A broad pale area in the foreground obscures the lower part of the landscape, making the mountains appear distant and still. No figures are visible; the photograph preserves only an unknown photographer's act of looking at the natural world.
In the drawing above, the artist reconstructs the contours of the peaks, the textures of the rock, and the changing areas of light and shadow. Dense pencil marks emphasise the structure of the mountains, while the lower part of the image remains largely undrawn. This treatment leaves the drawing suspended between completion and incompletion: it attempts to approach the photographic scene while simultaneously exposing the parts that cannot be fully recovered. The landscape therefore ceases to function solely as a record of a particular place and becomes a visual carrier of an uncertain memory.
Both photograph and drawing occupy only a small area within much larger surfaces of white and aged paper. This contrast in scale isolates the images and directs attention to their material qualities. The weathered paper and scalloped edges of the photograph underline its status as a historical object, while the vertical pairing establishes a response across time: the photograph fixes a past instant, and the drawing records a later, slower attempt to retrieve it.
The work thus considers the relationship between looking, copying, and remembering. The mountains appear to endure beyond individual lives, while the photograph's original owners and their experience of this landscape can no longer be traced. Rather than restoring that private history, the artist's reconstruction uses pencil marks, blank space, and material differences to make its distance and absences visible.
Presentation
Born in 1989 in Shenyang, China.
Lives and works between China and France, QI Han is originally from Shenyang, a city in northern China. He was introduced to contemporary art during his studies in Dalian (China). QI Han's artistic creations are mainly painting. Being greatly influenced by the concept "the imagination of northern culture" proposed by the artists representing the Northern Art Group in the 85 'Artistic New Trend movement at the beginning of contemporary Chinese art, he expresses rationality in his works. , coldness and indifference by studying the mysterious power of the culture of North China.
In 2014, after arriving in France, he began to create video works. As he also lives and studies in the north of France, his visual memory of the environment where he grew up meets the aesthetic tradition of architecture and religious painting of the Flemish region, as well as the icy and hazy climate. North. This gives QI Han a unique artistic experience to explore the "cold aesthetic".
In 2017, QI Han participated in the AR + image sector between the École Supérieure d'Art du Nord-Pas-de Calais and Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts. QI Han started to use multimedia in his works, in which there are some installations and performances. During this period, QI Han directed its creation towards the interdisciplinary field of art and science, especially with regard to interstellar space. Subsequently, he created the series "The spatial landscape" which includes painting, installation, video.
QI Han is also deeply influenced by the artistic conception of Chinese landscape painting proposed by the Chinese painter SHI TAO (1642-1707) of the QING dynasty. He refers a lot to Hieronymus Bosch, René Magritte, Philip K. Dick, and Stanley Kubrick. The character of QI Han's works consists of elements of science fiction, mysticism and surrealism.
