Beyond the Shifting Light is an original large contemporary abstract landscape diptych by Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026. Composed of two 120 × 85 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, the work combines atmospheric neutrals with deep green and blue tones in a composition inspired by water, reflections, and changing light.

When I began this diptych, I was thinking about those brief moments when light completely transforms a landscape. Clouds move, reflections appear across the water, colors become deeper, and suddenly a familiar place seems new. I wanted to capture this transition rather than represent a particular location.

I worked on both canvases simultaneously, allowing the colors and forms to develop as one continuous visual experience. Broad horizontal passages suggest distant land, open water, and reflections, while textured areas dissolve the boundaries between landscape and abstraction.

The upper sections combine ivory, soft white, warm beige, misty grey, pale blue, and blue-grey, creating a luminous and atmospheric feeling. Toward the lower areas, the palette becomes richer and more dramatic with deep forest green, muted teal, charcoal, blue-black, espresso brown, and earthy umber. Small accents of ochre and burnt orange add warmth, suggesting fleeting sunlight touching water or distant land.

I created the surfaces with professional acrylic paints using palette knives, brushes, layering, glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques, dripping, and expressive gestural marks. Some areas are dense and tactile, while others remain softer and more transparent, allowing the sensation of light and movement to change across the paintings.

Although the composition suggests water and landscape, I intentionally avoided defining a specific place. One viewer may see a coastline after rain, another a lake beneath moving clouds, or simply an imagined landscape formed through color and texture.

The two paintings were conceived as a single artwork. They are connected through color, horizontal movement, and atmosphere without becoming mirror images. The physical space between the panels creates a natural pause within the composition.

Moving between abstract landscape, contemporary seascape, atmospheric abstraction, and expressive painting, is ultimately about the temporary nature of perception. For me, light changes the landscape, water changes the light, and for a few moments something familiar can become entirely new.

Displayed together, the two panels create a large composition approximately 170 × 120 cm, excluding the chosen gap.
