Description
Mapped by Water is an original large-scale abstract triptych by Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026 as part of the Oceanic Geometry series. The artwork consists of three 140 × 80 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, conceived as one panoramic composition exploring the relationship between water, architecture and geometric structure.
I created this triptych around the idea of an imagined map—not a map of a real place, but one shaped by movement, reflections, structures and intersections.
Across the three canvases, vertical and horizontal forms appear, disappear and reconnect. Some suggest fragments of contemporary architecture, while others evoke coastlines, reflections, piers or boundaries between water and land. The spaces between the canvases become part of the composition, creating pauses while allowing the visual rhythm to continue from one panel to another.
The palette combines ocean blue, pale aqua, dusty turquoise, blue-grey and soft ice blue with ivory, white, warm beige, greige, taupe and stone grey. Deeper passages of charcoal, blue-black, espresso brown and dark umber create contrast and structure, while touches of ochre, amber and burnt sienna introduce warmth.
I developed the surfaces through multiple layers of professional acrylic paint using palette knives and brushes, combining glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques, layering and expressive gestural marks. Some areas were painted, partially removed and rebuilt, allowing traces of earlier layers to remain visible.
From a distance, appears structured and architectural. Up close, scraped surfaces, broken edges, fine linear marks and spontaneous gestures reveal a more organic character.
For me, this contrast is at the heart of the Oceanic Geometry series: architecture and water, geometry and movement, structure and freedom. We create coordinates and boundaries to understand the world, while water constantly transforms them.
Although the triptych may suggest a coastline, marina or contemporary waterfront architecture, it does not represent a specific location. I wanted to leave the geography open, allowing each viewer to discover their own associations within the work.
Displayed together, the three panels create an impressive composition approximately 240 × 140 cm, excluding the spaces between them.
This is a one-of-a-kind original triptych, painted entirely by hand in 2026. Each canvas is signed on the front, and the artwork is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
The paintings are sold unstretched and unframed and will be carefully shipped rolled in a protective tube.
