Between Structure and Tide is an original large contemporary abstract diptych by Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026 as part of the Oceanic Geometry series. Composed of two 140 × 80 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, the work brings together architectural geometry and the fluid, constantly changing character of water.

While creating this diptych, I was fascinated by the contrast between two opposing forces. Architecture is built around structure, proportion, and permanence, while water is defined by movement and transformation. I wanted to bring these qualities together and explore what happens when rigid geometry begins to interact with something fluid and unpredictable.

Strong vertical and horizontal forms create an architectural framework across the two canvases. Against them, softer passages of pale blue, powder blue, blue-grey, white, ivory, beige, taupe, and stone grey suggest water, mist, reflected sky, and shifting light. Charcoal, black, espresso brown, burnt umber, and subtle ochre accents add depth and visual contrast.

The surfaces were developed with professional acrylic paints using palette knives, brushes, glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques, layering, dripping, and expressive linear marks. Dense textured areas alternate with softer translucent passages, while scratches and exposed underlying layers give the composition a sense of construction, movement, and history.

The two paintings were conceived as a single composition rather than separate works. Lines and colors appear to continue from one panel to the other, while the space between the canvases becomes part of the visual rhythm.

Moving between geometric abstraction, architectural abstraction, and abstract landscape, remains deliberately open to interpretation. Forms may suggest fragments of modern architecture, reflections on water, distant coastal structures, or an imagined space where the built environment and nature begin to merge.

For me, the work is ultimately about the relationship between permanence and movement—between what we construct and what can never be completely contained.

Displayed together, the two panels create an impressive large-scale composition approximately 160 × 140 cm, excluding the gap between them.

This is a unique, one-of-a-kind original diptych from the series and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
