Description
1 - Description of the work
"Summer Weaving" lifts, on an untreated burlap canvas in linen gray, a field saturated with reds: coral, poppy red, raspberry, almost fluorescent orange. In the upper part, the color is placed in wide vertical bands juxtaposed, whose edges reveal the weave of the support. Over this, a network of wine-red and burgundy washes winds in loops, hooks, and taut threads, while fine orange threads descend vertically: the painting seems literally woven, between warp and weft. A white wash in relief crosses the left part like a flash of dry light. At the bottom of the composition, a bottle green base, denser, anchors the whole on the left, and a green void opens in the center right: the vegetal shadow under the bloom. A few splashes escape towards the margins, where the raw canvas reasserts itself.
2 - Critical analysis
A declaration of light within Excess & Splendors, the work fixes the beauty of high summer at the edge of its decline. The excess here is less overflow than woven density: • Weave vs. outpouring: the vertical bands and colored threads organize what the washes would disperse. • Warmth vs. shadow: the bottle green mass at the bottom tempers the incandescence and gives it a ground. • Pigment vs. weave: the untreated burlap drinks the color; the forms merge into it as if nature were leaving its own memory there. . 3 - Artistic and spiritual perspective
3.1 - In the work of GABAN the work forms with ardent Solstice, painted the same month, the vegetal slope of the same blaze: where the solstice makes light the excess itself, Summer Weaving remains attached to the field, to the stems, to the shadow. It finds an elegiac extension in Faded Splashes, which observes the end of the bloom that the canvas celebrates here at its peak.
3.2 - Artistic parentage
By its title as well as its execution, the work joins the research that, in the second half of the 20th century, brought painting closer to textile and made canvas a fabric in its own right, worked for its weave as much as for its surface. The field of poppies, a familiar motif of the summer landscape, is brought back to its sole chromatic vibration: GABAN keeps the sensation rather than the image.
3.3 - Spiritual resonance: The word "text" comes from the Latin textus, the fabric: many cultures have seen in the art of weaving an image of how a life is composed, thread by thread, day by day. The canvas carries this intuition. Summer is not an isolated instant, but a weave where light, sap, and time intersect. It recalls that abundance is not possessed: it is woven, patiently, before unraveling.
4 - Strengths of the work —
Conclusion A field of reds of great intensity, immediately expressive. A woven construction — bands, threads, washes — which gives its entire meaning to the title. Descended from a lineage of artists – grandson of Maxime Pierre André Verdier, painter and professor at the Beaux-Arts, and son of Michel Verdier, pathologist and leatherworker – GABAN carries in his veins the memory of gestures, the rigor of the gaze, and the freedom of pigments. But it is outside the academies that his work takes shape. A few courses, quickly abandoned. The essential is elsewhere: in the clash of colors, the visceral drive of the gesture, the tension between surface and depth. Never copy reality. Pierce it. Feel it. Invent it. With GABAN, emotion prevails over figuration, texture over line. His studios, in Paris and Aix-en-Provence, are sanctuaries. On one side a setting built for her by her partner, where the silent metamorphosis of an demanding and exposed Parisian life takes place, towards an inner fertility. There, the Ithaque house park unfolds its infinite palette of greens, ochres, wet shadows. Nature is not a source of inspiration: it is a matrix, a partner, a living double. On the other, his Parisian studio where the reflections of the sun on the Parisian rooftops are as many mirrors of souls, fertile ground for his creations. GABAN, a name chosen with poise by a woman who fully embraces herself but refuses assignments. Ambition is not gendered: to become a great artist, to sell his works during his lifetime, to exist in matter and in the market. That the art history is predominantly masculine is not a constraint, it is a field to reinvent. Appearing in painting in 2013 in a moment of assumed fracture with conventions and self-censorship, GABAN enters creation by breaking through. His period “EMERGENCE" (2013-2017) is dense, mineral, tumultuous. The canvases bear the stigmas of excess, of inner chaos, of flaws as much as of the will to extract oneself. The material is raw, sometimes black, incised, like scorched earth still smoking. Since 2025, a new era is taking hold: the period “CONVERGENCE", oriented towards calming, acceptance, openness. The colors broaden, the forms breathe, the gestures lighten without ever losing intensity. GABAN no longer seeks: GABAN is. And each canvas says it with elegance and power. GABAN does not paint to adorn, but to speak. To speak the dazzling beauty of the living, the subterranean struggles of the soul, and that quest for an always unstable balance between demand, freedom, and humanity.
