Description
This intimate format portrait is part of a rigorous figurative approach. The gaze, framed by brown glasses, fixes the viewer with an analytical neutrality. The face stretches according to a marked verticality. The features are drawn with surgical precision.
The smooth execution emphasizes the artist's technical mastery. The palette remains deliberately restricted. Cold greys and off-whites dominate the composition. The contrast is accentuated by the deep black of the background and the dark tie.
On the left, a white and ocher structural element breaks the composition. This geometric shape brings architectural stability to the whole. The play of lines creates a tension between the subject and their space.
The use of tempera and oil on prepared support offers a semi-matte and dense rendering. Each skin tone is worked by subtle touches. The light, diffuse and frontal, models the volumes of the face with sobriety. The whole exudes an atmosphere of calm and concentration.
Presentation
Thomas Groslier was born in Amiens in 1957.
In 1976, he entered the Beaux-Arts of Valence.
During his training years, he was interested in the works of Delvaux, Gromaire, Balthus, De Chirico, Van Gogh and Fragonard.
Starting in 1983, he develops a figurative work drawing from classicism. His subjects are multiple: portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes.
His painting is characterized by a smooth and precise execution, as well as a generally restricted palette, dominated by blues, grays, and greens.
The artist favors small formats, more intimate ones, and develops different techniques. He works mainly with oil and tempera, on canvas, wood or cardboard, supports most often prepared by himself.
Since 1983, his work has been exhibited in different venues, galleries, and museums.
