Description
The title announces a sentinel, and that is what we are looking at: a guard figure, helmeted, tightly framed, caught in a harsh backlighting. The face occupies all the space and spills out of the frame. Nothing around, no scenery, no escape—only this head turned towards the light, jaw clenched, fixed gaze.
Everything plays out in the chiaroscuro. The left half is swept by a white light, almost raw, which flattens the cheek and the helmet into broad, smooth surfaces. The right half plunges into a dense, hatched shadow, teeming with dark pieces where the eye must search to find the shape. Between the two, no soft transition: a sharp border that cuts the face in two and gives it all its tension. It is a cinematic lighting, the kind reserved for characters whose judgment is not yet known.
Without color, Brick Board Builder works only with value. The palette is limited to a few dozen shades—pure whites, ivories, creams, pearl grays, mouse grays, anthracites, blacks—and each brick is chosen for its exact position on this scale. The large light plaques in the background lay down calm flat areas; the technical pieces, gears, discs, and tiny fragments build the disorder of the dark areas. The contrast between these two textures, smooth on one side, bristled on the other, does as much work as the value itself.
This is the most demanding exercise in the workshop. Too light a gray and the modeling collapses; a poorly placed black and the gaze is lost. On an image this saturated, the mistake cannot be recovered.
No brick has been placed according to a plan. Each element has been chosen by hand, from a stock of used LEGO® bricks arrived in bulk from all of France and sorted one by one—some of which come from solidarity reuse through the association Rejoué. Pieces without history that find a new one. At this density, the quantity of bricks handled is counted in tens of thousands: this work can never be redone exactly the same.
No impression, no reproduction, no artificial intelligence. A built work, numbered and delivered with its certificate of authenticity and signed on the back.
Presentation
The art of pixel pop.
“I deal with the constraints of brick as others deal with painting."
Gregory, aka BBB, doesn't paint: he builds. Brick by brick, pixel by pixel, he assembles art with patience, precision... and a certain playfulness.
Trained in interior architecture and technical drawing, he diverts LEGO – a universal, almost childlike material – to create a unique, vibrant, unexpected visual language.
His works combine technical rigor, subtle narrative, and nods to pop culture. From afar, a familiar image. Up close, a complex world. What he creates are slow surprises. Each painting reveals itself in two stages: first the obvious, then the strangeness, the detail, the hidden emotion.
It's an art of patience and pixels, a meticulous construction game that thwarts our perception. BBB revisits icons of contemporary visual culture—mythical characters, musical figures, popular heroes—and slips into them his own grammar, made of rhythm, silence, and graphic tension. He doesn't play with LEGO. He plays with complexity. With our gaze. With the pleasure of revealing the unexpected.
