Description
Second part of the series. Same principle, same black, same bet: build only the light and let the gaze do the rest. But where the first part framed a face, this one captures an entire body—a kneeling silhouette, fist on the ground, arms folded, in the posture of landing most recognizable in contemporary superhero culture.
The void occupies four-fifths of the painting. The figure is just a constellation: dozens of small light clusters, separated by black, that almost never touch. No outline, no continuous line. Nothing says where the armor ends and the shadow begins—and yet, the shoulder, the helmet, the back, the knee, the forearm fall into place instantly.
It is that the work is not played on the panel but in the eye of the one who looks. Our brain does not tolerate an unfinished form: it fills in, it closes, it reconstructs. Brick Board Builder places each fragment in the exact spot where the light would hit the metal—an edge of the helmet, a border of the chest plate, a gleam on the thigh—and the black takes care of the rest. The painting does not show armor: it triggers one.
The palette is reduced to the strict necessity. Whites, ivories, pearl gray, cool grays, a few blacks to carve out the joints: no color, no red, no gold. It is a strong choice, almost counter-intuitive for a subject associated with color, and it is precisely this stripping away that gives the piece its elegance. What remains is no longer a character: it is a posture, a tension, a mass ready to rise.
No brick was placed according to a plan. Each element was chosen by hand, from a stock of used LEGO® bricks arrived in bulk from all over France and sorted one by one—some part from solidarity reuse thanks to the association Rejoué. Pieces without a history that find one in it. Against such a bare background, a single misplaced piece would collapse the illusion: this work can never be remade identically.
No impression, no reproduction, no artificial intelligence. A built work, numbered and delivered with its certificate of authenticity, framed and signed on the back.
Presentation
The art of pixel pop.
“I deal with the constraints of brick as others deal with painting."
Gregory, aka BBB, doesn't paint: he builds. Brick by brick, pixel by pixel, he assembles art with patience, precision... and a certain playfulness.
Trained in interior architecture and technical drawing, he diverts LEGO – a universal, almost childlike material – to create a unique, vibrant, unexpected visual language.
His works combine technical rigor, subtle narrative, and nods to pop culture. From afar, a familiar image. Up close, a complex world. What he creates are slow surprises. Each painting reveals itself in two stages: first the obvious, then the strangeness, the detail, the hidden emotion.
It's an art of patience and pixels, a meticulous construction game that thwarts our perception. BBB revisits icons of contemporary visual culture—mythical characters, musical figures, popular heroes—and slips into them his own grammar, made of rhythm, silence, and graphic tension. He doesn't play with LEGO. He plays with complexity. With our gaze. With the pleasure of revealing the unexpected.
