Description

Still life with lemons — Gabriel Riesnert, oil on linen, 46 × 33 cm, 2026
Gabriel Riesnert places his approach within the tradition of the still life while subverting it with his angle of approach. Where the classic still life — Flemish or Dutch — arranges its fruits in the center of a carefully composed table, at eye level, in calculated stability, Riesnert chooses a slightly elevated viewpoint that places the viewer on the very edge of the scene.
Three lemons, still with their leaves, rest on a blue patterned earthenware plate. But it is the fourth one that captures attention: isolated, it borders the edge of the table, in a suspended balance. Riesnert thus transforms the most static genre in history into a painting of tension. The fruit seems about to roll, to fall. This gesture, seemingly trivial, is the heart of the artist's approach: to infuse time, movement, and uncertainty into a genre that excludes them by definition.
The light cuts the lemons into volume and makes the yellows vibrate against the deep green background, almost abstract in its treatment. The painter, faithful to his practice of photographic-inspired realism, paints the material with tactile precision: the grain of the wood, the enamel of the earthenware, the slightly textured skin of the citrus fruits. But this virtuosity is never an end: it serves a dramatic intention, that of capturing the moment before.
Riesnert composes a small narrative of domestic peril — a still life that no longer speaks of the vanity of the world, but of the fragility of the present moment.

Presentation

Born in 1970, Gabriel Riesnert lives and works in Paris and south of France.

Since his early age Gabriel Riesnert has been fascinated by the beauty of plant forms and urban architectural lines. His passion pushes him to a practice of painting and drawing between photographic inspiration and urban realism. The artist's consideration of painting is essentially turned to a representation of what we see and perceive of these forms, whether they provide a fiction or an impression of beauty, of serenity.

Beyond the visual, the creation of a work for Gabriel Riesnert is an interpretive experience and a journey intimately linked to space and time. His paintings often represent spaces and forms that are inspired by the tradition of the natural and architectural landscape.
