Description
Inspired by the dusty, raw, and vibrant atmosphere of John Fante's classic novel, (Requiem for a Nun), this work offers a visual reflection on the quest, fragility, and memory. The artist appropriates a timeless icon — the face of Christ and his crown of thorns — to project it into the heart of an urban and contemporary aesthetic.
The image, realized with a deep black stencil, is printed on a torn poster fragment, directly taken and saved from the walls of the street. A direct witness to the passage of time, the weather, and the urban fading, this makeshift support brings a rich texture and a deeply living history. On this uneven surface, the artist deploys an explosion of bright colors (yellow, pink, orange, blue) in the form of dynamic splashes and drips, evoking both the blinding light and the disillusionment of large urban spaces.
The work is ready to be exhibited and sold with its black matting, which structures and perfectly highlights the poetic brutality of the subject.
Presentation
In the early 1990s, Jean-Michel Lourenço performed alongside rock bands: during their set, he painted on stretched canvases in a figurative style inspired by H.R. GIGER.
Himself a guitarist in several punk-rock groups for nearly 20 years, Jean-Michel Lourenço has always drawn his inspiration from music.
After a stint at the Beaux Arts in BESANCON, where he learned the different techniques of engraving, he began to paint canvases inspired by jazz and cinema.
He makes portraits in oil, stencil and also mixes the two techniques.
In a more Pop Art style, he creates canvases using torn posters.
Jean-Michel Lourenço also produced several frescoes adorning buildings in the town of VESOUL.
