Rainy days, 2026

Natalya Mougenot

“Rainy Days" is a contemporary expressive figurative painting in vibrant colours, celebrating childhood memories, the quiet poetry of ordinary moments, and the feeling of time slowing down on a rainy day.

Three umbrellas rest together in a container, accompanied by a pair of green rain boots and a blue raincoat, ready for the next walk outside. Yet, in this moment, everything is still. Beyond the window, the rain may continue to fall, but indoors, there is a feeling of warmth, shelter and unexpected freedom. There is nowhere we need to rush to, nothing that must be accomplished immediately. Life pauses, just for a little while.

Rainy days invite us to experience a different rhythm. We stay at home, watch the changing light, listen to the rain against the windows, read, draw, play, or simply let our thoughts wander. Ordinary activities become small rituals, and the hours seem to unfold differently. This painting celebrates that gentle interruption of everyday life — a reminder that not every moment needs to be productive to be meaningful.

At its heart, Rainy Days is also a painting about childhood and the way children perceive time. Do you remember those rainy days when you had to stay indoors? A single afternoon could feel wonderfully long, almost endless. There was time to invent games, explore familiar corners of the house, daydream and become absorbed in the smallest details. What an adult might experience as an ordinary afternoon could become an entire world in a child's imagination. Through this work, Natalya invites us to reconnect with that slower, more open experience of time, when the world felt larger and even an uneventful day could hold a little magic.

Natalya Mougenot develops a distinctive artistic language that moves between expressive figuration and abstraction. Rather than reproducing objects with photographic precision, she transforms familiar domestic elements into a lively composition of colour, movement and emotion. The umbrellas, boots and raincoat become more than practical objects: they are fragments of a remembered experience, carrying the warmth of home and the anticipation of the world outside.

Her approach is recognisable in the confident, visible brushstrokes, layered pigments, spontaneous contours and unexpected juxtapositions of colour. Vivid reds and pinks meet deep greens and blues, while luminous yellows and ochres create an atmosphere of warmth. The objects retain their recognisable forms, yet their outlines remain free and expressive, allowing the painting to preserve the immediacy of a lived moment. The slightly irregular geometry and rhythmic arrangement give the composition its own visual music.

Colour in Mougenot's work is not merely descriptive; it is a language of feeling. The warmth of the interior contrasts with the imagined coolness of the rainy outdoors, making the home feel like a small, protected universe. Her expressive technique brings a sense of movement even to a scene of stillness, as if the memory itself were alive on the paper.

With its balance of spontaneity, colour and tenderness, Rainy Days invites the viewer to look beyond the familiar objects and rediscover the emotion held within an ordinary day. It is a celebration of home, childhood, imagination and the quiet luxury of having nowhere to go.

Sometimes, the rain does not interrupt life. It gives us permission to slow down and notice it.
