This painting represents the portraits of two emblematic 20th century painters, Djan Daqian and Pablo Picasso. Two artists who have their own path in an artistic life full of experience. In 1956 they met at Pablo Picasso's in Antibes, France. This meeting is presented, at the time, as a summit between the greatest painter of Western art and that of Eastern art. They left us beautiful, magnificent, astonishing works. We can dive into its wonders by discovering how to see things from different angles. Each of these two artists build on previous artistic traditions and bring their own novelties. This drive to discover new horizons has constantly animated them. Their meeting in France manifests in everyone a desire for openness and discovery of another novelty, that of another continent. An artist with his knowledge of Western painting and an artist with his knowledge of traditional Asian painting. Horizontal space and hope in man are significant in these artists. They are represented as the messengers of Apollo (in ancient Greek Ἀπόλλων / Apóllôn, in Latin Apollo) who is the Greek god of arts, song, music, poetry and conductor of the nine muses. Their heads are surrounded by a large golden halo in the shape of a square. Gold is a symbol of light, of qualities, of this energy which exceeded them. The wings are the symbols of the messengers in traditional iconography. The satyr Marsyas playing the aulos is depicted at their feet. Marsyas was a Silenus, god of the Marsyas river, a tributary of the Meander in Anatolia. Pindar tells how the goddess Athena, after inventing the aulos, threw it away, annoyed that he distorted her face when she played it. Marsyas picked it up and began to play it with such grace that all listeners were enthralled, stating that he was more talented than Apollo himself. Marsyas, very proud, does not contradict them, until one day his fame reaches Apollo, who challenged him (according to other versions it was Marsyas who launched the challenge). The background of the painting is inspired by a well-known work by Daqian "View of Lake Achensee". The Achensee (Lake Achen) is an alpine lake located in the district of Schwaz, north of the Tyrolean municipality of Jenbach, Austria. Djan Daqian saw this beautiful place during his trip to Europe.
