Expressionism Paintings for Sale
The Expressionist painting is a major artistic movement of the early 20th century, characterized by a desire to represent intense and subjective emotions rather than objective reality. Originating mainly in Germany around 1905, Expressionism emerged as a reaction to the social, political, and cultural upheavals of its time, notably the anxiety towards modernity and the First World War. This movement favors vivid and contrasting colors, distorted and exaggerated forms, as well as often dramatic compositions to convey deep feelings such as fear, pain, or passion.
Among the emblematic figures of Expressionist painting, there are artists like Edvard Munch, famous for his work The Scream, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, founding member of the group Die Brücke, as well as Emil Nolde and Egon Schiele. These artists explore various techniques ranging from oil painting to pastels, including engraving, relying on a style marked by spontaneity and a break with traditional aesthetic conventions.
The movement quickly spread throughout Europe and influenced parallel movements such as Fauvism in France or Cubism. Expressionism is divided mainly into two trends: Die Brücke, focused on raw emotion and revolt, and Der Blaue Reiter, more spiritual and symbolic, with artists like Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. The movement has deeply influenced modern art history and continues to inspire many contemporary artists.
Expressionist painting emphasizes an exploration of the human condition, a questioning of existence, and a rejection of realism in favor of an inner, sometimes unsettling representation that invites the viewer to an intense emotional experience.
