Her Living Light — Original Contemporary Woman Portrait
“Her Living Light" is an original contemporary portrait painting of a woman by French artist Natalya Mougenot, created in an expressive figurative style with Fauvist and Post-Impressionist influences, using acrylic paint on professional acid-free paper, measuring 29.7 × 42 cm (11.7 × 16.5 in).
Description:
Her Living Light is part of Natalya Mougenot's ongoing series dedicated to women and women's portraits—a body of work in which the artist explores not only the appearance of her subjects, but above all their inner world.
The woman depicted here has her eyes gently closed, creating a feeling of introspection, calm and emotional depth. Her face is constructed through unexpected combinations of pink, violet, blue and warm earthy tones, while her vivid red clothing and luminous turquoise background create a powerful visual contrast.
Yet this is not a portrait concerned with traditional realism. For Natalya Mougenot, transmitting emotion and feeling is more important than faithfully reproducing physical appearance. Her women are intentionally simplified and transformed through colour, expressive lines and spontaneous brushwork. Their individuality emerges not from photographic likeness, but from the atmosphere, strength and emotion that the painting communicates.
This is what makes Mougenot's portraits distinctive. She does not attempt to tell the viewer exactly who the woman is; instead, she creates a space in which the viewer can feel her presence. A gesture, a closed eye, the tilt of the head, the surrounding colours or a single expressive line can communicate vulnerability, confidence, contemplation or inner strength more powerfully than realistic detail.
Her approach reflects the influence of artists who liberated colour and form from strict representation. Cézanne, Matisse and Van Gogh are important references in her artistic language: Cézanne for the construction of form through colour, Matisse for expressive colour relationships and simplified shapes, and Van Gogh for emotional intensity and the physical energy of the brushstroke. These influences are not copied, but absorbed and transformed into Mougenot's own contemporary visual language.
The meaning of Her Living Light:
The title refers to the inner light that every woman carries within herself.
Life can bring difficult periods, uncertainty, loss, pressure and challenges. Yet even during those moments, something remains alive inside us—a quiet source of strength that allows us to continue, adapt, rebuild and move forward.
In Her Living Light, the closed eyes can suggest a moment of turning inward: rather than looking at the outside world, the woman seems connected to something deeper within herself. The vibrant colours surrounding her reinforce this idea. The red suggests vitality and courage, the luminous turquoise brings openness and air, while the violet and pink tones create a more intimate, emotional atmosphere.
The painting therefore becomes more than a portrait. It is a visual reflection on resilience, femininity and the strength that exists beneath the surface.
Why this portrait is unique:
What makes Her Living Light particularly compelling is the tension between recognisable human presence and expressive abstraction. The woman is immediately understandable as a figure, yet her features, clothing and surroundings are deliberately interpreted through bold shapes and brushstrokes.
This gives the work an emotional openness: the viewer does not simply observe another woman, but can project their own experiences and feelings onto her.
For collectors, Her Living Light offers an original contemporary interpretation of the female portrait—one that is personal, expressive and emotionally driven rather than purely descriptive.
It is especially suited to art lovers who appreciate contemporary figurative painting, expressive portraits, Fauvist colour, modern women's art and emotionally charged works. In an interior, its strong red, violet and turquoise palette can create a striking focal point while its contemplative expression brings a quieter emotional dimension.
Framing:
The artwork is sold unframed, allowing it to be presented according to the collector's personal taste.
The original measures 29.7 × 42 cm (11.7 × 16.5 in), corresponding to the standard A3 format. A standard 29.7 × 42 cm frame is therefore an easy framing option where dimensions are given in centimetres.
Where frames are sold in inches, a 12 × 18 in frame with a mat/passe-partout is a practical choice, with the mat cut to the artwork's exact dimensions. A custom frame can also be selected for a precise gallery presentation.

Her Living Light is ultimately a celebration of the invisible strength within women—the inner light that continues to exist even when life becomes difficult. Through colour, gesture and emotion, Natalya Mougenot invites us to look beyond the face and discover the woman within.
Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
