These photographs in the MATAS series may bring a Dionysian understanding of nature's complexity that surpasses the scientific, distant, and the binary way of approaching meaning. Representing the organic using the chemistry of light in an organic way is more reminiscent of the myth.
This black and white photograph captures an entrancing scene of nature reclaiming an abandoned space. The viewer’s eye is drawn through a rectangular doorway, centered amidst the dense, seemingly impenetrable foliage that engulfs the walls of the once-inhabited structure. Vines cascade downwards, intertwining with wild branches, as the ground is overtaken by a chaotic sea of leaves and twigs. The stark contrast of light and shadow highlights the texture and depth of the overgrowth, creating a hauntingly beautiful interplay between nature and decay. The composition is meticulously balanced, with the doorway acting as a portal to the rich wilderness beyond. This artwork poignantly reflects themes of nature's resilience and the passage of time, evoking a sense of mystery and solitude, as it invites contemplation on the transitory nature of human constructs.
Presentation
Miguel Winograd is a Colombian photographer. After years of graduate study in Latin American History, he completed the documentary photography program at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. His personal work explores the relationship between people and their environment, narratives of social conflict, and the dense interconnections of the Colombian landscape. Occasionally, he prefers to make portraits of trees. His work has been exhibited in New York, Berlin, Mexico City and Bogotá, and published in different media, including The New York Times and The New Republic.
