Description
0529, 2022 by Salvatore Arnone. From the ONE series. Photographic print on paper. Paper size: 174 H x 135 W cm. Edition of 3 Unframed
Despite photography remains his main form of expression, the author starts seeing some limits in this media to properly describe his altered and often dreamy vision of reality. In this series photography mixes with several other techniques (pastels, acrylic, pencil…) to represent the duality of objective/subjective, real and imaginary. This artwork presents a striking juxtaposition of nature and technology, featuring a detailed illustration of an octopus. The creature’s tentacles, intricately rendered with realistic texture and shading, twist and curl dynamically around a central element—a green barcode. This unusual integration of a barcode into a natural form challenges the viewer to reconsider the relationship between organic life and modern consumerism. The black and white depiction of the octopus contrasts sharply with the vivid green of the barcode, drawing immediate focus to the intersection of marine life and digital symbolism. The barcode's presence suggests themes of commodification and identity in a technologically driven world. This piece effectively uses minimal color to emphasize its message, creating a thought-provoking visual experience that invites deeper reflection on the impact of human technology on the natural world.
Presentation
The Italian artist Salvatore Arnone has lived and worked in Paris since 2014. After starting his career as an engineer, he turned to jewelry creation and worked for different brands around the world for nearly 10 years. . Despite this immersion in the creative field, at one point he felt the need to devote himself solely to photography and focus on his own vision.
In 2010 he was first published on Vanity Fair Italia and over the years his work has been featured in several magazines and exhibitions around the world. Starting at the age of 25, he began suffering from progressive hearing loss due to genetic cellular degeneration which required him to use hearing aids. The absence of meaning has profoundly affected his perception of the world around him and his social relationships, pushing him into a slow but constant process of self-isolation which is clearly visible in all his output.
His images mainly revolve around the search for a personal idea of beauty which often blends into sadness and silence, of harmony in chaos, of balance in imperfection which represent the leitmotif of the all of his work. The author is currently focusing on his personal work and is also experimenting with other media besides photography.
