Description
Untitled VIII, 2022 by Salvatore Arnone. From the Balance series. Photography and acrylic on paper. Image size: 50 in. H x 35 in. W. Edition of 3 + 1AP. Unframed
With Balance the artist starts exploring more deeply the boundaries of the photographic media by mixing it with different techniques on a very traditional subject (classic sculptures). Pictures come from the collections of the Archeologic Museum of Naples and the Louvre in Paris. This artwork presents a striking digital manipulation of a classical bust, rendered with a glitch effect that captivates the viewer. The image features a prominent bust of a bearded figure, likely reminiscent of Greco-Roman sculpture, surrounded by a minimalist composition. Bold, horizontal black bars intersect the image, introducing a modern, abstract element that contrasts with the traditional subject, while enhancing the piece’s dynamic tension. The addition of a barcode on the right side introduces an unexpected contemporary twist, hinting at themes of commodification and identity in the digital age. This juxtaposition of classical and modern elements, alongside the vivid cyan and red hues that amplify the glitch effect, creates a visually compelling narrative. It challenges the viewer to reconsider the intersection of history and technology, making the piece both intriguing and thought-provoking.
Presentation
The Italian artist Salvatore Arnone has lived and worked in Paris since 2014. After starting his career as an engineer, he turned to jewelry creation and worked for different brands around the world for nearly 10 years. . Despite this immersion in the creative field, at one point he felt the need to devote himself solely to photography and focus on his own vision.
In 2010 he was first published on Vanity Fair Italia and over the years his work has been featured in several magazines and exhibitions around the world. Starting at the age of 25, he began suffering from progressive hearing loss due to genetic cellular degeneration which required him to use hearing aids. The absence of meaning has profoundly affected his perception of the world around him and his social relationships, pushing him into a slow but constant process of self-isolation which is clearly visible in all his output.
His images mainly revolve around the search for a personal idea of beauty which often blends into sadness and silence, of harmony in chaos, of balance in imperfection which represent the leitmotif of the all of his work. The author is currently focusing on his personal work and is also experimenting with other media besides photography.
