Description
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)
Vermeer probably painted around fifty paintings in his lifetime. He married in 1653, raised about ten children, and only left Delft once or twice to go to Amsterdam and as often to Utrecht.
2024 (1666) – Oil on canvas and a stupid smile.
Also on display at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Some have called it the Mona Lisa of the North; it represents the golden age of Dutch painting. Her gaze is direct, imbued with gentleness and mischief. The pearl is a nod to her love of oysters from the Gulf of Morbihan. The gold of her turban evokes the lovely color of the beer one drinks with friends in the early summer evening.
Presentation
The digital brush and the bold pixel are Olivier Dupont Delestraint's tools for transforming the paintings he photographs during his travels. He then writes the true story of fake paintings created, in their time, by real artists. He teases our fetishistic relationship with masterpieces, challenges the power of the label; he plays on a very contemporary question: what constitutes authority?
